JOB PURPOSE
As the Senior Employment Tax Manager, you will be responsible for providing employment tax advice and overseeing all aspects of global employment tax compliance and reporting. You will achieve this through proactive delivery of value, in line with our Global Tax Strategy, through effective strategic advice and partnering with the business. As well as, full compliance with statutory requirements. Employment tax compliance is delivered through Burberry’s shared service HR Operations team and outsourced payroll providers.
This is a mixed advisory and compliance role, and is responsible for supporting the delivery of the Group’s tax strategy, internal tax policies, tax risk and control frameworks as they relate to employment taxes. This includes proactively identifying and implementing improvements where these will deliver value to the Group.
You will report to the Tax Director Group & APAC, and will be a key member of the Global Tax Team of 17 people across three continents. You will work very closely with Burberry’s HR Operations, Reward and mobility teams.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This role will involve you:
- Developing and implementing the Group’s Employment Tax policy, aligned to the Group Tax Strategy, ensuring optimal systems, processes and team capabilities
- Being responsible for the Group’s Employment Tax Control framework and Processes, delivered through internal shared service functions and third party outsource providers
- Owning employment Tax Risk Governance frameworks, striving for continuous improvement in the Group’s tax governance, controls and processes. Proactive identification of risks and implementation of mitigations
- Supporting on expatriate tax/remote worker issues and will be the primary point of contact for HR, Payroll, Immigration and internationally mobile colleagues to advise on overseas employment taxes and social security.
- Managing international employment tax issues arising from global mobility. This includes managing the process for monitoring movements, liaising with advisors and partnering closely with HR on policy and processes. Managing necessary actions on international cases through to completion.
- Managing new global compliance processes and internal improvements to the end-to-end process including any technology solutions.
- Managing global employee benefit reporting. Specific management of UK compliance including transition to payrolling benefits, PAYE Settlement Agreements, including negotiating the PAYE settlement agreement with HMRC and overseeing the production and review of the annual PSA return
- Advising on employment tax aspects of share plans, including the tax reporting for share plans and developing tax guides for our various share plans in each location
- Pro-actively partnering with stakeholders to develop successful long-term strategic relationships, advising on operations and transactions to add value and reduce risk
- Advising on all employment tax issues, including employment status, termination payments etc
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationship with HMRC as the main point of contact in respect of employment tax, including dealing with HMRC enquiries.
- Reviewing new international legislation and reporting standards and advising on the implications for the Group
PERSONAL PROFILE
- Qualified accountant (ACA/CIMA/ACCA), tax advisor (CTA), Masters in Tax or equivalent
- Relevant experience in employment tax advisory and compliance in a large multinational business
- In-depth UK employment tax knowledge. Italian, US and APAC experience is desirable
- Experience with payroll and HRIS systems
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and collaboration skills, ability to simplify complex messages for key non-tax stakeholders
