Burberry Beyond

Our latest Responsibility strategy, Burberry Beyond, encompasses everything we do across our company, supply chain and communities to create a better world for the next generation. As a modern British luxury brand, we are committed to acting responsibly as a business to achieve our goals and to do well by doing right.

We have set ambitions across four priorities – product, planet, people and communities – each of which are supported by targets that we track progress against to create lasting change.

Product

For over a century and a half, we have carefully crafted products that are made to last. From the materials we use to the aftercare services we provide, we are committed to increasing the longevity of pieces for our customers. We are also consistently improving and innovating our manufacturing processes.

Working across our value chain, we are focused on sourcing certified and traceable key raw materials, embedding circular business models and eliminating plastic from our packaging.

Ongoing initiatives and policies include our aftercare service, which helps customers extend the life of our trench, leather and cashmere products, and our partnerships with rental services to eliminate waste, which includes a UK-based pilot with My Wardrobe HQ and a trial with Cocoon, the luxury bag subscription service. These pilots are helping inform our circular business model strategy moving forwards.

Planet

As a brand with a deep affinity for the outdoors, we strive to act responsibly with respect to the environment and have a number of ambitious targets.

We are committed to becoming climate positive by 2040. We have set science-based targets to reduce absolute carbon emissions across our own operations and value chain. Our targets have been validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and are in line with a 1.5°C pathway set out in the Paris Agreement and the SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard.

This commitment guides how we innovate across our value chain to achieve our ambition. Alongside reducing emissions, our strategic priorities include embedding sustainable manufacturing processes and protecting nature through material certifications, responsible sourcing and collaborating with experts to mitigate global deforestation.

People

We are committed to supporting our people, both within Burberry and across our value chain. From workers’ wellbeing to driving progress towards our diversity, equity and inclusion ambitions, we collaborate closely with partners and colleagues to build a more inclusive future where creativity can thrive.

Ensuring progress towards our diversity, equity and inclusion ambitions includes achieving 95 per cent completion rates globally for episodes one and two of our employee learning journey, as well as increasing representation by ensuring recruitment shortlists are gender balanced and the percentage of ethnic minority candidates is increased to a set benchmark.

Across our value chain, we continue to ensure our responsible sourcing standards and sourcing requirements are upheld by partners. We also aim to extend our Supply Chain Engagement Programme which further advances wellbeing, livelihoods, inclusivity and worker voices within our supply chain. In FY 2022/23, our Wellbeing Programme reached 15 key manufacturing facilities and finished goods vendors and has impacted over 5,000 workers globally.

Communities

Our values are deeply embedded in how we operate and have been core to our brand since the company was founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856. We continue Thomas Burberry’s altruistic legacy today by supporting young people, championing our communities and collaborating with organisations to make a positive impact on the world.

Our communities strategy is focused on three areas where we can make a meaningful difference: empowering youth, fostering creativity and protecting communities. We have taken part in many life-changing initiatives, from supporting Marcus Rashford MBE and his revolutionary work with children’s reading, to supporting LGBTQ+ organisations and launching Burberry Inspire – a five-year programme to support, inspire and connect young people by uniting schools with local arts and creative communities.

Our work with and for communities is supported by The Burberry Foundation, an independent charity set up by Burberry Group plc in 2008 with a dedication to using the power of creativity to drive positive change in our communities and build a more sustainable future.
