Senior Engineering Manager

JOB PURPOSE
As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will take full ownership of the engineering roadmap and excellence for both the Customer Commerce and Customer Management streams, leading multiple engineering teams in building and scaling innovative solutions. You’ll be responsible for driving technical excellence, fostering team growth, and working cross-functionally with key stakeholders in Product, Platform, and Delivery to deliver on business objectives.
Role can be London or Leeds based.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and Manage Engineering Teams: Oversee multiple engineering teams working across the Customer Commerce and Customer Management pillars, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and technical excellence.
- Develop & Scale Technical Solutions: Drive the development of systems in Customer Commerce (including Checkout, Add to Bag, Payment Systems, GraphQL, and microservices) and Customer Management (including CRM, Clientelling solutions, iOS apps, CIAM, and IMA).
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner closely with Product Managers, Delivery Managers, Platform Engineers, Solution Architects and BAs to deliver high-quality solutions and drive innovation across the business.
- Ensure Technical Excellence: Champion engineering best practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and code quality, ensuring that teams follow robust QA processes.
- Mentor & Grow Teams: Cultivate a high-performance engineering culture by mentoring and supporting the growth of engineers, fostering an environment that encourages collaboration, creativity, and continuous improvement.
- Strategic Leadership: Set technical and operational strategies that align with business priorities, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and with high-quality standards.
- Stakeholder Management: Navigate a matrixed organisation and manage multiple stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and alignment between business and engineering teams.
PERSONAL PROFILE
- Technical Expertise: Strong background in JavaScript technologies, preferably NodeJS, with experience in GraphQL and a working knowledge of AWS and IaC (Infrastructure as Code).
- Engineering Leadership: Proven experience in managing and scaling engineering teams, ideally within the retail or a similar industry.
- CI/CD & QA Knowledge: In-depth understanding of continuous integration, continuous delivery pipelines, and QA best practices.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Experience working in a matrixed organisation, collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Product, Platform Engineering, and Delivery.
- Hands-on Development Background: Previous experience as a software developer, with a deep understanding of technical challenges and how to guide teams in overcoming them.
- Team Growth & Mentorship: A passion for mentoring and developing engineering talent, with a proven track record of building strong, high-performing teams.
Preferred Experience
- Microservices Architecture: Experience in building or managing teams working with microservices (100+ microservices architecture).
- Customer-Focused Solutions: Background in developing customer data platforms, payment systems, or clientelling tools.
- iOS Development Experience: Understanding of iOS app development processes for internal and external applications.
