JOB PURPOSE

ITALIAN LEAD ACCOUNTANT

 

  • Burberry plc, a global multi-billion-pound luxury fashion business, is seeking to hire an RTR Lead Accountant for the reporting of their biggest entity in EMEIA. The role is part of a new Burberry Business Services (BBS) organisation based in Leeds, United Kingdom.
  • The Lead Accountant is responsible for execution of Record to Report (“RTR”) EMEIA tasks within the BBS Finance function in the BBS in accordance with the Group Policies, IFRS and local GAAP requirements. In addition to relevant technical accounting expertise, this position requires a strong professional with high attention to detail.
  • The role will also include improving BAU processes and involvement in projects to achieve efficient ways of working.
  • The successful candidate will actively be required on occasions to work with a project/transformation team to transition from the existing arrangements, before subsequently taking responsibility for delivering all RTR activities for their entities and those of his/her team. 
  • In future, the candidate will be required to supervise a junior accountant for their development in the RTR EMEIA team.    
RESPONSIBILITIES

Delivery

  • Execution, self-review and approval of RTR transactions and reports.
  • Preparation, interpretation and review of management accounts. Together with variance analysis for specific parts of the P&L such as payroll and PAYE.
  • Preparation of statutory financial statements to local Italian GAAP, ensuring all relevant disclosure requirements are made.
  • Perform his/her own BS reconciliations and also review those prepared by future direct reports.
  • Prepare and Review VAT matters, including VAT Returns, EC Sales lists (= Esterometro) and Intrastat submissions.
  • Ensuring compliance files are adequately maintained.
  • Working to time and budgets deadlines.
  • Responsible for timely completion of  compliance tasks associated with entities accountable for.
  • Responsible and accountable for the end-to-end solution and performance of an integrated set of EMEIA processes.
  • Job holder will be accountable for training and supervising a Junior accountant in the future but not immediately, which in turn will service functional shared service requirements.
  • The successful candidate will conduct regular 1-2-1 and provide regular feedback on performance of Junior Accountants. 
  • Ensure compliance with the Group Policies, including operating effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Manage relationship with key internal stakeholders including Group Finance and Commercial team.
  • Role may require some travel at times and work on some weekend/public holidays during half year and year end periods.


Leadership

  • Ensures that Group Finance, Tax, Commercial Finance, Operations and BBS business goals and performance objectives are reflected and achieved in the process improvement projects and operations of the end-to-end process.

 
Continuous improvement

  • Apply understanding of assigned business process to identify gaps and propose continuous improvement measures.
  • Work closely with the process owners to understand root causes and represent process procedures, practicalities and exceptions.
  • Proactively seeks feedback from peers, Group Finance, Tax team, Commercial Finance and Operations specialists, as well as their team, and uses this to inform future delivery of services.
PERSONAL PROFILE

Qualifications & Experience

 

  • Must be fluent in Italian and English
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field is required.
  • Professional accounting qualification is required e.g. ACA, CA, ACCA or CIMA.
  • At least 5 years of relevant accounting experience, 2 years of which post qualification. 
  • Previous experience of accounting for an Italian entity or fluent in Italian. 
  • Experience of ERP systems; SAP training and certification is a plus. 
  • Fashion retail industry and Italian accounting GAAP experience is preferred but not essential. 
  • Strong technical background with experience in a FTSE company applying IFRS or local accounting GAAP is required. 
  • Worked within a multicurrency environment, analysing and understanding the impact of movements in exchange rates in all areas of income statement. 
  • Experience of BPC, and advanced excel skills, an advantage.
  • Demonstration of supervisory experience, including history of hiring, training, motivating and retaining accounting personnel is desirable. 
  • Must be able to fully grasp the broader issues in the Service Centre in Leeds. 
  • Requires good understanding of IT systems and processes.
  • Has track record and appetite for delivering continuous improvement. Able to generate commitment to change amongst team.
  • Can provide evidence of working collaboratively with peers.
